Camp Winfield-WTF is it anyway?
May. 3rd, 2009 02:54 pmIf you've been following this blog, you probably know that I have (finally) found a job that isn't retail. Oh no, this summer, I will be working as a multimedia programmer at Camp Winfield. I've been fielding a fair amount of questions about this lately, so I'm going to make a public post (the horror) and answer questions about it. I'll be at camp from June to mid August, and I'm planning on updating this blog during then(yes, I'll get breaks). Will there be more public posts? Maybe. We'll see.
Camp Winfield is one of three Easter Seal Camps. They are sleepaway camps for children ages six through eighteen, and they are run by the BC Lions Society (which is kind of like Rotary, but not international, more local). They feature dorms, swimming pools, ocean/lake access for canoeing, built in trampolines, climbing walls, outdoor camping nights, and much much more. There are six programmers, and between eighteen and twenty counsellors. As I mentioned, I am the multimedia programmer. This means that I will be helping to come up with the weekly themes, and activities. I will also be in charge of all of the computers, cameras, televisions, dvd players, projectors, etc at camp. Apparently there's also a kareoke machine, which I'm pretty stoked for.
All of the children whom come to these camps are disabled. Some of the disabilities they may have are: cerebral palsy, spina bifida, downs syndrome, foetal alcohol syndrome, epilepsy, global developmental delay, muscular dystrophy, seizure disorder, autism spectrum disorder, prader-willi syndrome, visual impairments, hearing impairments, angelman's syndrome, and williams syndrome.
It's free for campers to come to camp, primarily due to the donations the Lions make through their fundraising. However, there are always other opportunities to raise money for this fabulous cause. For example, on June thirteenth and fourteenth, I'll be participating in the Money Mart 24 Hour Relay in Kelowna. Donations can be made here. If you're in the area, you should totally come participate, it'll be a blast. I've done it before, and it's always awesome.
PS-Consider this the premiere of my camping icon, unless someone can make me something better.
