First, I'm going to friend you back, hooray.
I'll start off by saying Kelowna, and the Okanagan, is a gorgeous area. There's lots of fruit, great skiing/snowboarding/boating on the lake, and it is a fabulous place to raise kids. My mom moved me and my sister from downtown Victoria to Kelowna when I was nine, and in that respect, I was able to have a 'traditional' childhood.
However, Kelowna is painfully conservative. By that, I mean the pride festival has only returned in the past year, and the political riding is one of the ones that voted against gay marriage. My old high school has a GSA now, but that's only been in the last few months. There are a lot of churches, many of which are evangelical.
Myself, I've been out since I was 15. Neither one of my girlfriends in Kelowna held hands with me in public, because of the closemindedness. That said, one of my mother's old colleagues was a lesbian, married with kids, very out about it, and no one at her elementary school [she was a teacher] hassled her.
Honestly, I'd say that Vancouver Island is more gay friendly. It's closer to Vancouver, but you can escape the crowds and hustle better. People here are ridiculously accepting, and the weather's more consistent.
If you flip through my LJ archives, you'll get more of an idea, probably. :)
